Is Food all you think about?

Is it just me or do other mum's wake up and instantly think about what to feed the family with for the day?

It seems that from waking up, all I can think about is my options of what to make or bake for the family coming
in from school or work.

My children are very easily pleased in the sense of their meals and will eat anything I make them so it is nice
to be able to try new things without worrying they will not give it a go to.

The only thing I am getting annoyed at though is the fact I do a monthly shop which saves us money buying it in one big bulk, but I am finding myself buying the same items on every shop.

I always fill my feezer with meat as we are a family of meat eaters and the fridge with fresh veg which gets topped up every week but for some reason I have always seen a good meal to be a meat and two veg dish and it seems to have stuck with me through out growing up .

This often means I enjoy making meals such as lasagne, spaghetti bolognaise , broth and dumplings, roast dinners, potato /pasta bakes etc .
I do not buy many ready prepared choices like chicken nuggets or fish fingers etc , as the family always
prefer home made and fresh although I admit there are the odd occasions where it seems quick and simple when I am feeling tired or ill.

This has started to bore me in something I used to really enjoy as I now am beginning to get into a monthly routine where the children even know what they are getting for their tea time meals.

For instant on the day the shopping arrives, I always make us a lasagne with salad, chips and corn on the cob. It is a family favourite and so we all really enjoy it , but predictable meals are becoming annoying and I actually made myself not make a lasagne last night (food arrival day) and made a chicken and bacon supreme potato bake.
It was absolutely deliscious , I can not deny that. The brother in law who can be quite fussy with food especially
vegetables, stayed over after helping my husband at work, actually called it handsome which made me over joyed.

It was nice to change the routine around and we all really enjoyed it.

I want to ensure I have made a nutritionally balanced meal at the end of the day. This is what leads me to making at least one big meal each evening .
The children are all on school meals and although I have seen the menu which looks and says it is healthy, I actually can not comment on what my children are eating, how much they are consuming and what ingredients are being placed into each of their school meals.

This is the reason I make an evening meal myself. I think it is important not only for me but them to understand that fresh home made meals are far more healthier and fulfilling to eat than a quick ready meal like chicken dippers and chips for example.
They all enjoy helping in preparing the meals with me from the 4 year old to the 12 year old and I think this is something they can all learn for the good of their growing up.

Today I woke to find myself taking out the fresh mince to make our evening meal but what am I going to make. We usually use mince for a lasagne, shepherds pie or spaghetti bolognaise so what else can I do with it ?

Are you a person who wakes up and instantly thinks about their evening meals, how do you manage to keep new ideas coming to the table ?

At the moment I am currently enjoying my most favourite dinner time snack , the freshly made ham , salad sandwich in extra seeded loaf. Now this is a dinner I always enjoy .

yes!!! im so glad im not the only one. I usually have tea in the slow cooker before 8am! I think when you are eating real food rather than ready prepared you have to be ahead of the game. Like you I cant get beyond meat, potatoe and veg, its our staple for our evening meal. The only thing I make with mince is sheperds pie, i make this once a week as its everyones favourite, i'd love to find something new to do with it, we dont eat pasta/wheat so bolognaise and lasagne are out

Make meatballs! They are so easy and tasty, and you can pack lots of vegetables into the sauce.

I find myself desperate for inspiration - we tend to get in a rut over evening meals, have the same things every week or two for ages, and then move on to another set, and I instantly forget what we had before. I'd love to have a monthly plan of different meals every day for a month.

Sounds like you are doing a great job, don't be too hard on yourself. At the beginning of the year I challenged myself to come up with 14 meals that everyone likes and will eat that are very quick and easy. I think that we are almost there and once it is decided, that is it! We will eat those meals on rotation forever as I just don't have the time or energy to think about what to eat every day. I need a plan and then I stick to it!

We do a weekly meal, plan. Hubby is a good cook but I'm pretty rubbish, so I tend to whack a loadmof ingredients in the slow cooker! We rarely eat meat/pots/veg type of meal. Our favourite at the moment is tex mex chicken!

We sit down as a family and plan out our meals. My boys are not interested in chicken nuggets either, so I cook from scratch each day too

Oh I used to love food and cooking but not now! My kids are dairy/soya/wheat/gluten free on medical instructions and it's a PITA catering for them. And my 16 yr old is ALWAYS hungry too lol! I tend to batch cook and freeze loads.

Oh I get tired of the same old family favourites all the time, I can often be found looking confused in a supermarket aisle wondering what on earth we can have for dinner that is a bit different! If it was up to me, I would live on sandwiches, yours looks good!

I find that when ordering online I often order the same food, so once a month I will go and shop in the supermarket, taking inspiration from the shelves. The best way to do though is a weekly board of al your meals planned. Then you can get creative and don't have to worry about what you have to cook that evening. x

Oh I am awful at this! I never have anything planned even when dinner is due in ten minutes!! I have bought a dinosaur sandwich cutter this week though and that's proving super popular :D

I think I am a creature of habit in the kitchen. I am very guilty of making the same family favourites week after week. Last year I tried a challenge of cooking one new thing every week but I gave it up!

That sandwich looks delicious!!! My husband normally cooks while I sort out our 3 YO but he usually cooks from scratch. I'm just starting to cook again so we take it in turns :)

I am always planning meals, cakes, bread, puddings the list goes on......
But I do love doing it after my family my kitchen is my passion. Have you thought of make homemade burgers, meatballs, pastry pie or a beef stroganoff style meal with your mince? I love looking through recipe books and adding my own twist by changing ingredients to make it my own. Hope this helps a bit x

I'm with you on this one. Recently we have been putting tikka sauce with the mince meat. We tried it with potatoes one week, and then wraps another, and rice another.

I hate knowing what we are going to eat. I love deciding what i fancy through the day but this is not cost effective so I really need to meal plan more.

What a photo, makes me want to go get something to eat :)
I have to confess, I am not a food person, and the males all love to eat routine meals and can get quite upset when I try to change their schedule... I am however very fussy when it comes to my cakes, so if I wake up in the morning with food-related thoughts it will be about which cake I want! :)

I love cooking from scratch and the girls love helping. I'm in the middle of trying to make a four week rolling menu, like the one they bring home for the school lunches so I can stop spending time each day searching for something to make and so we can have less spag bol, cottage pie, meat and 2 veg or chili and rice! Last night I made a lovely chinese pork with noddles. I'm following slimming world so I have loads of recipe books with SW meals in, I just need to be braver and try more of them :)

Wow, I'm feeling rather inadequate! No, never really food plan and it bugs the hell out of me. As a mum of four I'm ashamed to admit I'm rather crap in the kitchen and wish I was like you! I do however like to cook from scratch but I shop often, sometimes daily and even grab something on the way home! Bad mother lol xx

I seem to be always thinking about why we will eat! My daughter and I have lots of food intolerances and my son and boyfriendare very fussy eaters. It is hard work finding something to suit all of us! I buy and borrow lots of cookbooks and tweak to recipes to suit our needs. Bread, soups and slow cooker chicken and brisket are favourites in our house.
