16 Weeks Pregnancy Diary

Sorry it is a little late , I had two poorly little ones off school and ended up nursing them both from a bug they caught at school.
The end of my 16th week has arrived and I for one feel like this pregnancy is starting to go a little faster now .
I never realised that now I am on my 17th week and I am nearing the half way point quicker and faster until a reminder from a baby App popped up on my mobile screen on Thursday.

We had a big event this week and on Tuesday I visited the midwife for the third time for my 16 week check.
Not expecting anything other than those umteen pieces of paper with tons of information on or leaflets,
I had no idea that in fact my midwife was going to offer me the surprise of hearing my baby's heartbeat.

Firstly she advised me that hearing the baby's heartbeat at 16 weeks was not something they encourage like they used to because suposadly recent experiences in the past have shown that due to different BMI's of expectant mothers it was seen as more of a worry or concern if the heartbeat could not be heard.
They feel it is too early to determine who's heartbeat is who's and sometimes with higher BMI's , it is harder to find the baby's heartbeat and puts unnecessary strain on the expectant mother and this is why they now explain it to you and give you the choice yourself instead of making it a routine check.

Of course I felt more at ease knowing I was able to hopefully hear something .

I feel that 4 weeks between midwife and hospital scan visits , even as early as 16 weeks is rather a long time to have the mother waiting to see if everything is OK.
I know they say that you should look out for signs of something wrong happening such as bleeding or pains but sometimes things can go wrong without you knowing and I feel it outs our minds at ease even if it is something as little as a 5 minute check to hear the baby's heartbeat and to me it was absolutely an amazing feeling.

My youngest daughter was off school poorly and her dad was working so I recorded the whole thing on my mobile so I could send it straight to my Husband and my sister .
I could hear the heartbeat so clearly and I even giggled a little with relief that it was strong .

Baby-
It is hard to believe that the baby is meant to be the size of an avocado now and after having a little feel around my tummy , the midwife explained that my womb is now between my pelvis and naval area which is exactly where it should be at this time through pregnancy.

Who knew that my baby is now growing its own set of finger nails and its heart is now pumping around 28 litres of blood.
It seems rather a lot don't you think?

Myself-
I seem to have relaxed a lot more this week although the husband disagrees and says I am still very moody and constantly seem to be nagging him , in reality it was only because I was promised a hot chocolate I had been craving for three weeks aand was let down so in respect he deserved it lol.
He did however get me one on Monday though so I am back to being in a good mood, go figure!
Maybe he will know next time to just buy me one to keep the peace .

The cravings seem to have gone from Hot chocolate though since last week and turned to something I am in total delight about..... Cake!
As long as it is covered in Icing or cream , I have no care for what flavour it is just as long as it is sweet and delicious.
I have found it is the sweet foods I'm craving though mostly , although the odd time of the week Ii will feel the urge for a curry still pops up now and again but it seems to be sweets snacks and drinks I'm reaching for mostly .

Over the past week another thing Ii have seen change which Ii am over the moon about is that the headaches are easing off and nearly completely vanished , making my days so much more enjoyable .

I have had no concerns this week what so ever although the muscles (or lack of) seemed to have been stretched this week and every time I moved standing or sitting, I felt them pulling and straining. I asked the midwife about this wondering if it was maybe due to the fact that my tummy muscles have softened with having previous children but she explained that it should disappear around the 24th week and it is perfectly normal .

If you remember I attempted to walk to the school in some lovely summer sandels last week and I ended up with badly bruised feet .
Well luckily I bought myself those new canvas shoes I much needed as the straps snapped on them just as I payed for them and now my feet feel a little more comfortable walking .

I feel more energetic , the sickness is finally wearing of and I no longer feel the need to rest as often, I am hoping that it lasts in time to enjoy the gorgeous sunshine I am hoping for this year .

Another new thing noticeable this week is that although I am eating less snacking foods, I have come to realise that I am very hydrated and feel the need to drink more .

The midwife checked my hydration levels and I was perfectly fine so no worry .

I have been thinking about how good I also feel that I realised I am now into my 19th week which is 4 and a half months into my new smoke free life and feeling rather proud of myself that I had quit before conceiving this little miracle.
No way I will ever go back now.

Roundup-

  • Cravings- Cakes and more cakes
  • Dislikes -
  • Certain smells such as brown sauce and coffee
  • Comments -  ''How long have you got left''?
  • Mood- Moody and snappy but content in my self
  • Clothes -  New shoes were needed and also new tops

So as you can see this week apart form the usual cravings and the amazing heartbeat hearing , nothing much else has happened in regards to me and bump but I am sure it will start picking up a little more in the next few weeks .

Hope you come back next week for more updates .

Seems a shame to deny women the chance to hear the heartbeat at this stage in pregnancy. Glad you got to hear it.

I can not believe that you haven't had a scan year. I had one at 22 weeks and then again 20 weeks and this was 10 years ago!
