Pregnancy Old Wives tales ''GIRL or BOY''?

As soon as you actually find out that you are pregnant , the ultimate questions start , especially the ''Is it a boy or girl'' question and I for one know too well that daunting feeling where your having to wait for what feels like a lifetime to find out.

Over my past pregnancy's I have given the odd few a try and to be fare they have been pretty spot on using the old wives tale methods.

This time I thought it would be a great idea to get two lists together , one for boy predictions and the other for the girl predictions and see which side was highlighted most with all my baby's and my own symptoms.

I actually only ever remember two of them which were the wedding ring on the thread and the heartbeat rate one but when I searched for a list I found there were in fact so many I could make an eventful evening of the testing them out so that is exactly what I got on with doing.

I ensured I had everything prepared , grabbed my notebook and pen and all the bits and bobs needed for each test and went one by one through the whole list.

Old wives tales for pregnancy are just a little insight (although not completely accurate) as to whether you are carrying a boy or girl. To me it just seems a lot of fun and a great way to get yourself even more excited until the big day eventually arrives and baby is born or you decide to find out on your 20th week scan.
I am very impatient so for me I will be finding out at our scan in just a little more than 3 weeks so therefore this is the reason I thought I would test to see if these are indeed accurate or really are just a myth that can not be relied on.

Please remember this is all a bit of fun , please don't rely on any of these being accurate because even during scans people have been told it is one sex and when it is born they have been given the total opposite and those tests were from actual doctors consultants or sonographers and you definitely can not change the sex of that little blessing already in your tummy .

Likely to be carrying a boy!
  • Baby's heartbeat is lower than 140 beats per minute
  • Carrying your bump all on the front
  • Carrying your bump low
  • Blooming in pregnancy
  • No sickness in 1st trimester
  • Right breast slightly larger than left
  • Pupils dilate after looking at yourself in the mirror for 1 minute
  • Savoury or salty cravings
  • Cold feet
  • Wedding ring on a thread held over your tummy swings in circles
  • Dry skin
  • Combining both your ages with the number of the month your conceived and it equals an even number
  • Hairs on legs grow faster
  • Urine is bright yellow
  • You were the dominant one whilst having sex and conceiving
  • Hair on head look more healthier
  • You sleep on your left side
  • You eat garlic and the scent seeps through your pores
  • Your scan shows your baby has a sloping forehead and a squared lower jaw
  • You are asked to show your hands and you present them palms down

Likely to be carrying a girl!
  • Baby's heartbeat is faster than 140 beats per minute
  • Carrying your bump all around
  • Your bump is high
  • You are certainly not blooming (they say when you carry a girl they steal all your beauty)
  • Morning sickness in 1st trimester
  • Left breast is larger than right
  • Look in the mirror and your pupils do not dilate
  • Craving sweet foods
  • Wedding ring on a thread hung over your tummy and it swings side to side
  • Your skin is soft
  • You are more moody
  • You are asked to show your hands and you present them palms up
  • Your partner was the more dominant one during sex at time of conceiving
  • Your hair is dull and lifeless
  • You lie on your right side while sleeping
  • Scan shows your baby's forehead is rounded and top of head is tapered
  • Your face gets fuller
  • Your urine looks dull or clear
  • If you pick up a key at the bottom (smallest part), you are going to have a girl.
  • Pull your eyelid and  If you see a “V” or “branches” in the white part, you’re having a girl.

So the old wives tales say that I am more likely to be having a girl but in all honesty , do we trust them enough to start shopping or is it really not all that reliable at all.
In a couple of weeks I will be getting the results from my 20 week scan so I will let you know the outcome but for now just remember it is all the fun of being pregnant and the sex can not truly be determined 100% until the birth of that little blessing.

Have you tried any of these , if so , were they correct?

Oh I'm so skeptical of things like this! I'm very superstitious and do everything the old wives tale say not too - like don't walk under a ladder!

I only found out about this tale way after Spud was born, however if I would of known about it when pregnant, I would of loved to give it a try!

Can you imagine if you do have a girl, that would be one amazing result from a tale!

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy and the 20 week scan, I couldn't wait to find out what we was having, it's all so exciting buying the first colourful piece of clothing xx

I loved guessing! There is a Chinese birth calendar too but the only that was true with all my four was the heart rate- mod 130s with the boys and over 140 with my daughter- and my niece too

I've used a few of these to guess the gender of my friends baby (blooming, carrying bump in front) & it was true, she is expecting a boy!

I'll be interested to hear whether you are in fact expecting a baby girl (:

I loved this post. It was a long time ago that I was pregnant and I can remember a friend telling me I was having a girl when I was about 5 months. Then when I was 7 months she changed her mind and told me my baby would be a boy as I was carrying to the front.

I had a boy :)

However, I was sick in the first trimester and can't recall the colour of my wee ;)

I had a boy and I'd say that as far as I can remember there were certainly more from the boy's list that matched than the girls.

WOW! There were loads there that I have never heard of before. I think I will try and ignore all these wives tales when I am pregnant. Keep it a complete surprise. After all what matters is the baby is healthy, not whether is a boy or girl.

With the heartbeats, ours was the wrong way round both times! And I was really sick both times....and have a girl and a boy, so I'm not entirely convinced of the accuracy of these :)

I have to admit I don't really believe these old wives tales and although the scan is pretty good i guess the only way you can really tell is when the baby is born!

I was convinced I was carrying a boy but it turned out to be a girl so I guess you never can tell.

I cannot believe time has gone so quick and you are only a few weeks away from your 20 week scan. Feels like you only announced your pregnancy a few weeks ago. These predictions are so funny but actually some of them make sense!

I am not so trusting of any of these, I know, I am so boring. I was convinced one of my sons was a girl, we did a few of these - he should of been a girl. He popped out as a boy.
x Congratulations, I had no idea you are expecting :) x x

None of these were accurate for my children but guessing was part of the fun. I was convinced OJ was a girl and was really shocked when he was born, I had been so sure!
